POSITION: Senior Accountant, Insurance Programs

SUMMARY The primary responsibility of the Senior Accountant is to provide high level analysis and accounting support for the various insurance programs, including, but not limited to, HPL/GL, Workers Compensation and Health Benefits, as well as, support for Pension Plan and Executive Rewards programs. Additionally, the Senior Accountant supports various special projects as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
A representative summary of tasks to be performed by the incumbent is provided below. The incumbent may be asked to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically stated in the description. The duties and responsibilities of the position are to be carried out in a manner that is consistent with the mission, values and operating principles of the client
1. Assist in the accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, audit and other financial analyses for the three self-insurance programs.
2. Assist management in working with the actuaries to gather and analyze facility data for annual actuarial report. In addition, assist management in the review and analysis of the quarterly and year end actuarial reports, in addition to, ad hoc actuarial reports.
3. Review quarterly financial statements of the offshore captive.
4. Responsible for working with the Risk and Insurance Services Department to reconcile the HPL/GL and workers¿ compensation loss/run reports on a monthly basis and assessing reasonableness of such reserves.
5. Responsible for tracking activity, reconciling monthly bank accounts, analyzing and inputting data into the various insurance program general ledgers.
6. Assist in the preparation of materials for the captives semiannual board meeting.
7. Work with Third Party Administrators to resolve reporting and banking issues.
8. Prepare Workers¿ Compensation Self-Insured Reports as mandated by the states.
9. Prepare Internal Revenue Service tax filings required for the offshore captive.
10. Prepare quarterly pension journal entries and year end pension footnote to financial statements.
11. Assist local systems with inquires regarding the programs; performing analysis as necessary.
12. Revise financial report specifications as necessary to meet changing analytical needs of management.
13. Preparation of written variance analysis for insurance programs (budget vs. actual).
14. Health plan analysis ¿ maintain the cost tracking analysis for the overall program and the local facilities performance.
15. Assist with the reconciliation of health plan premiums to payroll system. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS This position works under the general supervision of the Financial Manager, Insurance Programs and Financial Manager, Benefits.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / OTHER REQUIREMENTS Any combination of education and experience providing the required and desired skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.
Required qualifications:
1. Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration, or related Business degree from an accredited institution;
2. Three (3) years of relevant and demonstrated work experience in the production of financial statements, ,financial analysis, general ledger accounting, and electronic spreadsheet applications;
3. Specific knowledge and training in financial reporting and budgeting; Well-developed interpersonal skills to communicate (both verbally and in writing) tactfully, effectively and with discretion;
4. Proficient competency that allows management to expect that work assigned will be thoroughly reviewed, questioned and adjusted within the capabilities of the position;
5. Must be highly organized and have the ability to deal with multiple independent requests, issues and problems concurrently;
6. Ability to deal effectively with all levels of staff, to exchange information and ideas and answer inquires. Must be able to ascertain deficiencies in processes and recommend or implement improvements;
7. Must have a take charge attitude. Able to work independently, retain flexibility and maintain composure under pressure. Able to maintain schedules and meet deadlines; 8. Acute attention to detail and accuracy;
9. Energetic team player, willing to work with staff in other functional areas to accomplish common goals
10. Ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, database software, PCs, printer, facsimile and other office machines as needed. Advanced Excel knowledge. Desired
Qualifications:
1. Lawson general ledger experience;
2. Experience working with insurance programs;
3. Experience with actuarial analysis.
WORKING CONDITIONS Work from a headquarters environment in Maryland. Occasional travel may be required. This is an exempt position, requiring evening and weekend work, as needed.
